Microchipping FAQs

It’s all too common for pets to become separated from their families and reuniting them doesn’t always happen. However, there are steps you can take to increase the chances of your pet finding his way home. By microchipping your pet, you can stand a better chance that he will be found and returned to you. We at Broadway Estates Veterinary Clinic in Littleton, CO, are here to help.

What Exactly Is Microchipping?

Microchipping is the quick and easy procedure of placing a microchip about the size of a grain of rice just under the skin of an animal. The chip itself is enclosed in a tiny glass cylinder and does not have a battery. Instead, passing a scanner over the area causes radio waves to activate the chip. It then transmits its identification number which is then displayed on the scanner’s screen.

Does Microchipping Hurt the Animal?

Because the microchip is injected using a needle only slightly larger than the average injection, the process causes no more pain than your pet’s regular vaccinations. This means that no surgery or anesthesia is required and the chip can typically be implanted during your routine vet visit.

What Information Is on the Microchip?

Currently, microchips only contain the identification number of your pet. They, unfortunately, do not contain a GPS device that can be used to track your lost animal. The chip itself also does not contain your pet’s medical records, though some registration databases do allow you to store that information on their service should the veterinarian or shelter your pet is taken to need it.

Does a Microchip Work for Missing pets?

Microchipping can increase the chances that your pet is returned to you. Animals are far more likely to be returned to their owners than those that are not. Keep in mind, however, that this also depends upon the owners having their most current contact information in the registry database. Even if your pet never goes missing, having your pet microchipped can give you peace of mind that your pet is better protected if he does.
