We all value the companionship we share with our pets. As your pet ages, changes in it's behavior and physical condition will occur. At the age of 7-years +, is the time to start on a senior health maintenance program to provide optimal care for your older pet. Old age is not just a chronological measurement of years lived, rather it is a measurement of the function of our body systems subsequent to the effects of aging. Aging can be affected by a number of variables including genetics, diet and/or environment.
Day Stay - Drop of your pet at 8:00 a.m. the morning of your scheduled Senior Wellness Health-Care appointment. Bloodwork and the full Wellness Exam will be completed during the day. An afternoon appointment will be scheduled for you and your veterinarian to go over your pets Senior Wellness Exam Report.
Physical Examination - The single most important aspect of the wellness program is a thorough physical examination performed by your veterinarian. He/she may find important signs suggestive of dental disease, liver disease, osteoarthritis, heart disease, diabetes, etc.
Complete Blood Count (CBC) - A complete blood chemistry is used to detect abnormalities in the red blood cells, white blood cells, inflammatory cells, and platelets (which are important to help blood clot). A CBC may indicate early or chronic infections, anemia, and other infectious and immune diseases.
Blood Chemistry - The Blood Chemistry is used to check important enzymes and by-products in the blood that are used to determine the function and disease of vital organs, such as the kidneys, liver, pancreas, muscle, and the gastrointestinal tract. This test is critical in identifying diseases such as liver disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, and Cushing’s disease in the very early stages – before owners may notice clinical signs of illness.
Urinalysis - A urinalysis is used to detect abnormalities in the urine that could be caused from kidney, bladder, or Urethral disease. The urinalysis also tests for crystals that could be found in urine – and could be crucial to preventing bladder stones. A urinalysis is also very important for detecting early kidney disease before clinical signs occur.
Blood Pressure Check – Many diseases in pets can affect blood pressure, including heart disease, kidney disease and Cushings disease.
Tonometry – Pressure readings of both eyes will be taken to screen for canine ocular diseases such as glaucoma.
Body Map - Illustrated guide with measurements of lumps and bumps.
Periodontal disease can cause bad breath, gum disease, discomfort and problems chewing. The bacteria from the teeth and gums can enter the bloodstream, travel to major organs and may cause infections. This can lead to serious life threatening illnesses such as bone loss and systemic disease of the kidney, liver, joints and heart. With Good Dental Care, periodontal disease can be prevented and treated.
Dental Cleanings are performed by our terrific Technician Staff and your Veterinarian. A through Dental Cleaning includes ultrasonic scaling, polishing and a fluoride treatment. Teeth that are beyond repair my need to be extracted.
Depending on the age of your pet, a pre-surgical blood screen may be required. Typically, Dental procedures require general anesthesia.
